Newsletter October 2026

Dear rowing friends,
Today there are news from the sport, the construction diary and the autumn cleaning / brother weekend.

Work on the house is making rapid progress.
At the same time, the donation stand for our clubhouse at the German Foundation for the Protection of Monuments (DSD) is growing. The current level is 87.000€. That is already a good third of the amount (250.000€), which is doubled there by a patron. Now we need to stay tuned so that we can benefit from the full grant. Who has not yet donated or still has air: Now would be the perfect time for a (further) donation to the DSD, Every contribution helps!! (Donation account see below)

We hope to see many of you doing autumn cleaning, brothering and partying!

Rowing in autumn and winter

Please remember that the provisions of the Ramsar Agreement will come into force again on the first of November. Think of the life jacket and observe the winter driving regulations. This means: On weekends we are not allowed on the water until 9 a.m., during the week at 10 a.m. and in the evening you have to be back at the club until sunset.

Here is more about safety: www.mrc1880.de/rudern/sicherheit/

Men’s Rowing Challenge

It is time again: The Men’s Rowing Challenge is coming up.

In November, the second Men’s Rowing Challenge will be hosted by DRV and Concept2 – and the MRC will be back. After rowing to a top 10 position last year, we want to start the new challenge just as strongly this year.

All necessary details can be found here:

www.rudern.de/news/mens-rowing-challenge-2026-im-november-geht-es-wieder-an-die-ergometer

Key points:

  • The challenges are open to all men and male teenagers
  • Participants do not have to be club members
  • You can take part in the challenges at home or in the club, on a Concept2 Ergo.
  • Applications must be submitted via the Challenge Portal ’challenge.rudern.de” from 23.10. possible (Please select the MRC as a club!)
  • There will be joint ergo dates for the weekly challenges. These are posted on Crewman.
  • Please send your ‘proof photo’ or questions about the challenge to the challenge managers of the MRC at ’ergo-challenge@mrc1880.de”.

Let's drive Ergo together!

MRC1880 on the road: Schwerin, Noirmoutier, Kiel

DRV Wanderrudertreffen Schwerin 2026

On Saturday, 19 September, a good 250 rowers from all over Germany started their annual day trip together. The Schweriner See has certainly shown its rough side. Large waves to the Werderecke and lots of foam crowns have made the trip a special experience.
The whole thing is framed by a social program, celebrations and honors (and of course, a prize went again highly deserved to our rowing friends from ProSport Berlin). You can get an impression online in the photo galleries:
www.rudern.de/news/60-drv-wanderrudertreffen-in-schwerin-jubilaeum-und-premiere

Noirmoutier

Wolfgang Jacobi has been a member of the rowing club in Noirmoutier, France, for years and reports on the exciting rowing area on the island in the Atlantic Ocean. Guests are warm willkommevn.
Here is a Report.

Kieler Lichterfahrt

Konstanze Steinheimer-Breitkreutz reports on a very special exit on the Kiel Fjord, the ‘light ride’. The event also made it onto television (www.mrc1880.de/2026/10/eine-mrclerin-im-hohen-norden/).

Clubhouse

From the construction diary

In order for the scaffolding to be erected, the roof beams of the aft stable had to be supported. The carpenters have found a solution that does not bother us in rowing. Thanks to everyone who wobbled up the short-term announced boat outsourcing and later re-granting.

Demolition work is progressing well. In the attic, all partitions, wall and ceiling coverings as well as the suspended ceiling of the changing room are removed. The huge newly emerging ergospace can already be guessed (photo).

And by the way, there were still interesting discoveries: for example, a bundle of tickets for a regatta on Lake Starnberg in 1949, probably organized by the MRC, wooden objects with metallic fittings (photo below), of which we do not know what it is, deflection rollers and... ammunition. She was immediately handed over to the police, who professionally destroyed her. Unfortunately, we didn't have a chance to get the year out before. But it is obvious that the cartridges come from the Second World War.

The other items have been handed over to the City Archives. Everything was hidden on or behind the roof beams and on the suspended ceiling of the locker room.

Please feel free to contact Ulrike (ulrike.mertz@gmx.de) if you can say anything about these finds.

The shingling of the facade is also progressing well. The Starnberg Mercury also noticed this:
www.merkur.de/lokales/starnberg/starnberg-ort29487/aeltestes-ruderbootshaus-deutschlands-wird-fuer-millionen-euro-saniert-94525996.html

Many thanks to all helpers. The north and east sides are already completely shingle-free (photo). The other two sides were started. Near the East Tower, many sparrow nests and even a dwarf bat were found. The wasps preferred the north side. We were already able to hand over about 250 square meters of reusable shingles to the historic hardware store. Shingle helpers are still being sought. Feel free to join the Crewman for the coming weekends. If you are new, you will still receive a security briefing on the spot – just get it!

And please do not forget: All those who have already helped, for example when emptying the house, creating interim measures or taking skids, please enter in the working hours folder on the logbook. Follow up, if necessary, hours that you have not yet written down. This serves to document the own contribution contributed to the funding providers.

Autumn plaster

On Saturday, October 24, it's time for autumn cleaning at the MRC again. All members are invited and cordially invited to do so. From many years of experience, we would like to ask you to comply with the following rules of the game:

Start is on time at 11 a.m..

Then the groups are divided and the tasks are distributed. If you want to drink your coffee ready afterwards, you are welcome to do so, but should be present on time for the classification. At 1 pm there is a strengthening at club cost.
The expectation would be that every helper brings time until at least 4 p.m. Only after that there is the deserved after-work beer.
The big tasks this year are:

  • Make the terrain winterproof.
  • Make the ladies house thoroughly clean.
  • Prepare the friar festivities the following day.

In addition, measures as part of the clubhouse renovation, such as shingle removal.

Stefanie and Rolf are looking forward to all participants at 11 a.m.

Our sponsoring members are also cordially invited to the celebration!

Below is Hubert Friedmann's invitation for the Christmas concert on eight organs, which took place on 13. December in favour of the MRC construction project.

Adam's Eight

The film Adams Acht about the rowing coach Karl Adam by director Hannu Salonen moves rowers and other viewers, also internationally.

Donations

Clear the way – our common course towards the future

Your donation – small or large – brings us closer to the goal of renovating our beautiful, venerable boathouse. Every contribution counts. Each euro shows: We are pulling together – as if in a boat. For our planning, we assume that each member contributes an average of €1,000 – also in partial amounts or staggered over the entire construction period. This is how we manage to get our century project on track together.

Donations will, of course, Donation receipts issued. You're there right now? Then let's go!

So that you know exactly where your money is going, we offer you two possibilities to bring your donation directly to the water:

Our recommendation: Donation to the German Foundation for the Protection of Monuments (DSD)

Why? Donations to the DSD benefit our MRC boathouse: and the best: Every euro donated is doubled by a generous sponsor! Therefore, this is our preferred path.

  • Beneficiary: Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz
  • IBAN: DE71 500 400 500 400 500 400
  • BIC: COBADEFFXXX
  • Intended use: ‘PR07848-01 MRC boathouse’

Or simply donate Online via the DSD.

Alternative: Direct donation to the MRC

If you prefer to donate directly to our association without detours, you are of course welcome to do so:

  • Beneficiary: MRC 1880 e.V.
  • Bank: VR Bank Starnberg
  • IBAN: DE02 7009 3200 0002 9880 03
  • Intended use: Donate boathouse
