Learning to row

Learn one of the most beautiful sports in the world. Learn rowing.

Why you are no beginner for long at the Munich Rowing Club.

Because, although we are all volunteers, we take care of you like professionals. And because we

  1. We have a lot of experience in adult education.
Our trainers are well-trained, have mainly professional instructor licenses of the BLSV (Bavarian National Sports Association) and are very experienced. Not enough: Our trainers regularly train in courses. For he who ceases to be better ceases to be good.
We believe that not only young people, but also adults can learn to row. We don't set an age limit, but it's clear: Rowing is exhausting, from boat carrying to rowing, agility, dexterity and strength are a must. And this must also be said: You also have to be able to endure pain. The good news: You don't have to be two meters tall to row successfully (even if it doesn't exactly hurt to participate in the Olympics or World Championships).
  2. Take the whole thing very seriously and with a lot of work and commitment have developed a suitable concept and tested it in practice. We therefore deprive ourselves of the freedom to cancel interested parties who are unreliable. Because we have more enquiries than places available – so we only train beginners who really want to row and are fully committed to it – and stay.
  3. After the first eight weeks, invite them to join the club and continue in the advanced part of the training. Surely you will find a suitable group for you in the club, in which you can practice your new sport.
After eight practice sessions, it continues with the refinement of the learned to the maturity, even without a coach in the team or alone (in the practice boat) to go on the water.

But even when the beginner's training is over, you won't be left alone in the MRC. Every year, the training team organises a course programme where you can continue to work on your rowing technique if you wish. For those who want to learn something right now: Some teaching materials and information we have below summarized.

Reading for the cold season

Rowing is known to be a sport with a not exactly simple technique that requires a lot of concentration. But what should we focus on? While rowing, you're always busy, so it's worth thinking in peace about what you're actually doing. After all, nobody wants to row haphazardly! If we row for an hour at 20 strokes, do we do the same movement 1200 times – do we not want to do it as well, effectively and healthily as possible? Especially in the cold season you could take a warm drink and dedicate yourself to reading.

We recommend the following texts or websites:

Safety precautions
It is, of course, a duty of every rower to Driving and Rowing Regulations to know. In winter, special rules apply, which can be read on this homepage.

Basic course rowing
Volker Grabow’s ‘Basic Rowing Course’ in the MRC edition. Contents include rowing technique, sports equipment, rowing, safety and behaviour on the water.
