Newsletter May 2024 (2)

Dear MRCler,
Dear rowing friends,

As presented at the General Assembly, the MRC Board has revised the values of the association and is now working with a working group to further develop the association's culture in this context.

The summer season is just around the corner, and during the hot season, our flowers and plants want to be watered on the site. After stormy rains at the beginning of May, there was water in abundance for the first time, and a lot of clean-up work, but already 3 days later the Ascension rowers were able to enjoy their picnic rowing trip.

On the subject of cleaning, we also appeal to the users of lockers in the men's locker room and owners of loungers in the garden hut to label their compartments by name.

We look back on the Vogalonga participation of the MRC 1880, and report on the reappraisal of the DRV of the time under National Socialism.

How short is 2 seconds? Or rather how long? Kaspar Virnekäs and his team in four narrowly missed the qualification for the Olympic Games. Nevertheless – all respect!

Association culture - Values - Concept of protection against all forms of violence

The Board has set up a working group to transfer the values of the MRC 1880 (which has found its way into the revised house-and-row order as a new Chapter 1) from paper to daily coexistence. An important task is to develop a protection or early warning concept that helps us all, if necessary, to counter any form of violence already in the development phase.

The working group consists of a cross-section of competent and committed members, and is led by Manja Arlt and Kristin Teuber. We will report on the group and the planned procedure in due course.

Review: Ascension Picnic and Vogalonga

The Ascension picnic was very well attended – several eights and fours made their way to the picnic spot behind Rose Island. There was cold beer, warm liver cheese and foam kisses for dessert. The calories were retrained in the waves on the sporty way back. Many thanks to Guido Gilbert and Klaus Flügel for the perfect organization and catering.

Also the Vogalonga riders are back, and enthusiastic about a great rowing tour in a fascinating city, see also Short report with photos.

Summer season - Watering season!

Please help everyone that our plants come green and blooming through the summer. Especially the 2 beautiful oleanders, which were donated by Anja Eckert and now decorate our entrance, are very thirsty. Hoses and watering cans are available so that flowering meadows, beds, roses, pots and new plantings can be watered.

Lockers in the changing room Men

Many lockers on the 1st floor have already received new signs. Now we are in the process of assigning the unlabeled lockers by name. For this we compare different lists, and write to you if necessary. If your locker is not yet marked with your name or empty, please let us know. At the end of June, the lockers for which we do not receive any information will be reassigned.

Bronze figure and flag

The little rower bronze figure, which was reported missing in the last newsletter, has unfortunately not yet reappeared. The statue was presented in 1899 as a tribute to Caspar Braun, who was our chairman between 1891 and 1899. So here's the call again to contact Stefanie if you know anything about where to stay, or to enclose the statue anonymously in the valuables locker in the men's locker room and throw the key into the MRC mailbox.

On the other hand, our flag from 1884 has reappeared, albeit in an unfortunate state.

storms

On May 6, 1880, the MRC was flooded by heavy rain. The parking lot was temporarily 30 cm under water, and thus also shed and workshop. The water flowed in a wide stream past our house into the lake. Wastewater was added from the other side and poured into the lake between the boat halls. In several places it rained mainly in the main house. The tow bar has been washed under and has slipped. Please be careful when entering.

If you notice any further damage, please report it to the house and yard. Thanks to all those who have fought their way through the floods to take immediate action and to the last club service that has already cleaned up properly.

Recumbent cabin

Helga Gabler kindly takes care of a bit of order and overview in the chalet. As she repeatedly ‘sleeps around’ in and out of the hut, she makes the following appeal to Members:
Please do not leave your loungers in the hut aisle!
Nameless loungers, which are currently in the hut changing room, please clear away!
Please remove parasols or other items that are no longer in use or are broken.
If someone notices that there are still things in the hut belonging to people who have already left the club (or died), please let them know.
If seats are available, a recliner can be set after consultation with Helga. Contact: h.gabler@arcor.de

Paris just missed

After the German foursome (M4) with Kaspar on board, and a substitute man, could qualify for the final in Lucerne via the Hope Run, it was on 21.5.24 for the ticket to Paris. In an exciting race, the German boat landed just under 2 seconds behind the favourite Italy and the strong Swiss team in third place. The team fought hard and gave everything. Second place would have been needed to qualify for the Olympics. Kaspar, we are proud of you!

The DRV under National Socialism

The DRV sends signals in dealing with the past in the rowing world and in the culture of remembrance. We have already mentioned this investigation in the current MRC magazine Riemen&Skull 2024. In the 2022 edition, the pioneering work of the Frankfurt Germans was described in detail. Now the official DRV NS study is also ready, is online and is intended to motivate the rowing clubs (parts are also published in the rowing sports issue of May; It will be presented in the room).
